What happens when you get a cavity on a permanent tooth?

i have always wondered and i need to getan answer. do they pull the whole tooth or like the baby teeth, they get a filling. plus does it hurt when they either pull it or fill it?

What happens when you get a cavity on a permanent tooth?
my mom is a dentist and she said there are a couple of options....a filling....extraction....or if its bad enough a root canal!!!! it does not hurt to get it filled just uncomfortable and if its pulled they can numb ur mouth but a root canal is painful for days!!!! hope that helps!!!
Reply:They will usually fill it unless its totally damaged (like cracked or has multiple fillings in it). If it is really damaged they will give you a crown, but I dont think they ever really do that for your standard cavity.
